DH and I headed out last Friday to visit my mom and step dad in Illinois for the Holiday weekend to celebrate my grandmother's 80th birthday. Doesn't she look radiant? My aunt, uncle, cousin and his fiance joined us from Michigan. It was great to have everyone together!
On Saturday morning, I had the pleasure of seeing Madame Purl and accompanying her to the Fold after some much needed coffee and catching up. We had such a nice ride out and oh at the yarn and fiber at the shop. I picked up a few skeins of Socks that Rock (Medium weight) and several 2 oz servings of roving to experiment with.
Two by Two — I was able to finish 2 socks by 2 pm on Sunday, although not of the same pair. I finished up the first of DH Cherry Tree Hill socks and my first Bloomin' Feet sock came off the needles. The second sock of each was cast on and the knitting resumed. Although some little mischievous puppy did manage to eat a needle later in the day, the knitting was safe.
Unfortunately, DH had to head back home on Sunday but Aunt Mary, my cousin Marc and I had a bit of a scavenger hunt/dessert challenge on Sunday. Mom is probably one of the best cooks I know but she has never really enjoyed baking. Well you can't have a family dinner without dessert so the three of us decided to make dessert from ingredients around the kitchen. Easier said than done, not only does Mom not keep a whole lot of baking ingredients usually but she just moved int o a new house. If you have ever moved you understand how long it takes to 'restock' the items that could not be moved. I found out the hard way a couple of weeks ago that I didn't t have the ingredients to make the muffins I woke up craving. I digress, Boy did we have fun and a pie was born. Grandma's favorite is banana cream pie, so we had bananas, stuff for crust and custard. No mixer of any type. Enter Marc. Aunt Mary made a fabulous crust, I prepared the custard (we used amaretto instead of vanilla) and all the while Marc hand whipped the egg whites for meringue.
My work takes me a lot of places and I am fortunate that occasionally I land near family, I was able to coordinate a visit to one of our facilities not too far from Mom for this week. I headed out Monday evening for a hotel by the plant and look at what I woke up to on Wednesday. I had the pleasure of doubling my drive time back to Mom's after work but Terry (my step dad) certainly made it all worthwhile. He makes the most fantastic Mexican food and drinks. He spoiled us with margaritas and an appetizer of Chorizo sausage, peppers, onions and cheese with chips, stuffed jalapenos and then fantastic burritos and black beans with all the fixin's .
A good time was had by all!
Talk about a gargantuan post! The yarn and roving look awesome, I was hoping you’d post those. I’m totally impressed that Marc whipped the whites by hand and the pie sure looks good.
What a whirlwind. The food looks yummy.
okay – so we’re all drooling out here now – the food, the socks AND a visit to the Fold?? sweet! sounds like you had a good time.
